Chicago Interventionist for Addiction & Mental Health

When a loved one is struggling with substance use, mental illness, or complex behaviors, you don’t have to wait for things to get worse, or for them to ask for help.

Reflection Family Interventions has Chicago-based professionals offering local, in-person services across the city and nearby communities. Our process includes individualized planning, family preparation, a professionally facilitated intervention, treatment coordination, and six months of family recovery coaching.

We do more than stage one difficult conversations. We stay with your family after the intervention, whether your loved one accepts help right away or isn’t ready, so you can build the conditions for lasting change.

Work With a Chicago-Based Interventionist

Our Chicago intervention specialists work directly with local families facing addiction, mental health issues, dual diagnoses, and treatment resistance. You get the benefit of a local professional’s accessibility and regional knowledge, plus Reflection’s national resources and six-month family coaching.

Interventions can occur at your home or another private location in Chicago or the surrounding suburbs. Preparation and follow-up can include relatives who live elsewhere, so the process stays local while keeping key family members involved.

What Makes Reflection Family Interventions Different?

Many intervention services focus primarily on one outcome: getting the loved one to enter treatment. Reflection Family Interventions takes a broader and more durable approach. We want the person of concern to accept appropriate help, but treatment admission alone does not tell us whether the family is prepared for what comes next.

The Family Is Our Client

Addiction and mental illness affect more than one person. They can reshape communication, finances, parenting, trust, relationships, and the emotional stability of the entire household. We work with the whole family system, not only the person being asked to accept help.

Six Months of Family Recovery Coaching Is Included

Reflection is one of the few intervention providers to include comprehensive family services after the intervention. Your family receives six months of structured recovery coaching designed to improve communication, strengthen boundaries, reduce crisis-driven behavior, and support long-term healing.

Support Continues if Your Loved One Says No

A refusal does not mean the intervention failed. It means the answer is no today. We continue working with the family to understand the resistance, follow through on the plan, evaluate what is and is not changing, and create additional opportunities for the loved one to accept help.

Treatment Acceptance Is Not Our Only Measure of Success

Entering treatment is important, but lasting change requires more than admission to a program. We also focus on family stability, consistent boundaries, healthier communication, increased understanding, and the family’s ability to respond effectively without returning to fear, control, or enabling.

Our Recommendations Are Independent

Reflection Family Interventions is independent of treatment centers. We consider the loved one’s clinical needs, safety, location, finances, insurance coverage, previous treatment history, and long-term needs when helping the family evaluate options. We are not limited to one local program or a predetermined network of facilities.

In-Person, Virtual, and Hybrid Participation

Our Chicago-based interventionist provides in-person services throughout Chicago and Chicagoland. Preparation and coaching can also include virtual participation, allowing relatives in other cities or states to be meaningfully involved without delaying the process.

What Is a Professional Family Intervention?

A professional family intervention is a structured, compassionate process that helps a family respond to a loved one’s addiction, mental health issues, or refusal of care. It includes assessment, family preparation, a facilitated intervention conversation, treatment planning, and ongoing support.

The in-person conversation is only one part. Lasting progress depends on what the family learns, how members communicate, the boundaries they maintain, and whether they stop organizing their lives around the crisis.

Our Chicago-based interventionist helps families move from fear and confusion to a coordinated plan, clarifying what’s happening, what must change, and how to communicate with care and clarity.

The Urgent Need for Family Interventions in Chicago

Chicago has an extensive network of hospitals, psychiatric services, detoxification programs, residential treatment centers, outpatient providers, and community resources. Even so, the presence of treatment does not mean a loved one will recognize the need for it, agree to participate, or remain engaged after a crisis passes.

For many Chicago families, the problem is not simply locating a provider. The harder questions are:

How do we help someone who insists nothing is wrong?

What should the family do if help is refused?

What level of care is appropriate after an emergency-room visit or psychiatric hospitalization?

Should treatment remain in Chicago, or would a program elsewhere provide a better fit?

How do we bring relatives across the city, suburbs, and other states into one plan?

How do we prevent everyone from returning to the same patterns after the immediate crisis ends?

Those are the questions a comprehensive family intervention is designed to address.

Chicago Intervention Services for Addiction, Mental Health, and Complex Behavioral Concerns

Families contact Reflection Family Interventions when they know something must change, but don’t know how to do it safely or effectively. Often, the loved one denies the problem, refuses treatment, makes promises that don’t last, or insists others are overreacting.

We help families respond to concerns involving:

  • Alcohol and other substance use
  • Opioids, fentanyl, stimulants, cannabis, or prescription medications
  • Repeated relapse or unsuccessful treatment attempts
  • Depression, bipolar disorder, mood disorders, psychosis, anxiety, or severe emotional instability
  • Co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders, or dual diagnosis
  • Gambling, eating disorders, and other complex behavioral concerns
  • Declining work, school, financial, or household functioning
  • Repeated hospitalizations, emergency-room visits, or crisis episodes
  • Treatment refusal or a lack of insight into the severity of the situation
  • Family conflict, enabling, isolation, and caregiver exhaustion

Early intervention does not require a family to know the exact diagnosis or the perfect treatment program before calling. Our team helps clarify the situation, identify appropriate next steps, and determine whether professional intervention is the right approach.

Your Family Does Not Have to Wait for “Rock Bottom”

Waiting for a loved one to become willing can allow the situation to grow more dangerous and the family system to become increasingly unstable. People often become willing after the conditions surrounding the problem begin to change, not before.

A professionally guided intervention helps the family stop waiting passively and begin responding intentionally. That can include presenting treatment options, communicating the reality of the situation, changing financial or housing arrangements, ending repeated rescue attempts, and setting boundaries that the family is prepared to maintain.

Willingness is not usually present at the beginning of the process. It can develop when denial is challenged, the family becomes aligned, and the current way of living is no longer supported.

How Our Chicago Intervention Process Works

Every family and every intervention is different, but our work generally follows four stages.

1. Confidential Consultation and Initial Assessment

We begin by learning what is happening, what the family has already tried, which risks are present, and what is preventing change. We also help the family understand whether a professionally facilitated intervention is appropriate.

2. Individualized Planning and Family Preparation

Before approaching the loved one, we work with participating family members to develop a unified plan. Preparation may include education on addiction or mental health, communication coaching, research on treatment options, logistical planning, and the development of realistic boundaries.

This stage matters because an intervention should not depend on spontaneous speeches or emotional pressure. The family needs to understand both what it is asking the loved one to do and what family members will do if help is refused.

3. In-Person Intervention in Chicago

Our in-person intervention phase is generally structured across two days and extends to three if needed. This provides time for final preparation, the intervention meeting, treatment coordination, and any necessary follow-up conversations.

The interventionist facilitates a direct and respectful conversation focused on the observable reality of the situation, its effects on the family, and the help being offered. When treatment is accepted, we help coordinate the transition and can assist with safe transportation when appropriate.

4. Six Months of Family Recovery Coaching

Our work continues after the intervention. If the loved one enters treatment, coaching helps the family prepare for communication during treatment, transitions, discharge planning, and eventual reintegration. If the loved one initially refuses help, coaching helps the family maintain alignment, follow through on boundaries, and continue creating conditions that support change.

The purpose is not to control another person. It is to help the family stop participating in patterns that keep the crisis unchanged.

What Happens if My Loved One Refuses Treatment?

A “no” isn’t the end. We keep working with your family, helping you understand why treatment was refused, hold clear boundaries, and avoid slipping back into old patterns. Sometimes a loved one reconsiders after the intervention, after facing a boundary, or after seeing the family respond differently.

At the same time, the family begins its own healing. Family members learn to communicate more effectively, respond consistently, and stop measuring every decision by whether it keeps the loved one calm or prevents an immediate reaction.

“No” sometimes means “not today,” not “never.”

Can Our Family Conduct an Intervention Without a Professional?

You can talk with a loved one on your own, but a professionally guided intervention is different from an emotional family meeting.

Without a neutral guide, conversations often aim just to get the person to accept treatment. If that doesn’t happen, talks can slide into bargaining, arguing, threats, or concessions that weaken the family’s position.

A professional interventionist helps the family prepare, identify unhelpful dynamics, communicate clearly, evaluate realistic treatment options, anticipate resistance, and develop a plan that will still work if the person refuses the first time. The goal is long‑term healing for the whole family, not a single dramatic moment.

The interventionist isn’t there to overpower anyone, they keep the family honest, compassionate, coordinated, and steady when emotions run high.

Mental Health Interventions in Chicago

A mental health intervention may be appropriate when a loved one’s psychiatric symptoms, impaired insight, or refusal of care place their health, relationships, housing, finances, or functioning at risk.

These situations can involve depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, extreme anxiety, personality-related concerns, trauma, or a combination of mental health and substance use symptoms. Families may be unsure whether the behavior is intentional, illness-driven, substance-related, or some combination of all three.

Our role is not to diagnose the person during an intervention. We help the family organize the available information, communicate its concerns, present an appropriate path to professional evaluation or treatment, and establish a sustainable plan for the family.

Addiction and Dual-Diagnosis Interventions in Chicago

Substance use and mental health concerns frequently overlap. Alcohol or drug use may worsen psychiatric symptoms, while depression, anxiety, trauma, mania, or emotional instability may contribute to continued substance use.

When both are present, focusing on only one part of the problem can lead to incomplete treatment planning. Reflection helps families consider the full picture, including substance use patterns, psychiatric history, medical needs, safety concerns, previous treatment experiences, and the environment to which the person would eventually return.

Our goal is to help the family pursue an appropriate level of care rather than simply the closest available placement.

In-Person Intervention Services Throughout Chicago and Chicagoland

Our Chicago-based interventionist serves families throughout the city, Cook County, and the surrounding suburbs. We can meet in the family home or another private, agreed-upon setting.

We serve families across the city, as well as communities including Evanston, Oak Park, Naperville, Schaumburg, Hinsdale, Lake Forest, and the broader North Shore, western, and southern suburbs.

Not all family members need to live in Illinois. Virtual preparation and coaching make it possible to include parents, siblings, adult children, or other participants who live elsewhere while keeping the intervention organized around one consistent plan.

Start With a Confidential Conversation

You do not need to have the entire family aligned, a treatment program selected, or your loved one’s agreement before contacting us. The first step is a conversation about what is happening and what options are available.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chicago Intervention Services

What does a Chicago interventionist do?

A Chicago interventionist helps a family prepare for and conduct a structured conversation with a loved one who is struggling with addiction, mental health concerns, or treatment resistance. The interventionist also helps assess options, coordinate treatment planning, manage resistance, and guide the family after the intervention.

Yes. Reflection Family Interventions has a Chicago-based interventionist who provides local, in-person services throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Preparation and follow-up coaching can be completed through a combination of in-person and virtual meetings.

Family members can participate in preparation and ongoing coaching virtually. We help organize the process so relatives in different locations receive the same guidance and communicate from a unified plan.

The process is designed for situations involving resistance, so the loved one does not need to agree to an “intervention” in advance. Your interventionist will help the family determine the most appropriate way to invite the person into the conversation based on the situation and safety considerations.

We continue working with the family. The first refusal may be one stage of the process rather than the outcome. Coaching helps the family maintain boundaries, change unhelpful patterns, and remain prepared when another treatment opportunity arises.

Yes. Hospitalization can be an important opportunity for the family to plan before discharge. We can help family members clarify concerns, communicate with the treating team when appropriate authorization is available, evaluate recommendations, consider the next level of care, and prepare for resistance after the immediate crisis stabilizes.

Yes. Reflection Family Interventions works with families facing mental health and complex behavioral concerns, even when substance use is not part of the situation. The recommended approach depends on the symptoms, risks, level of functioning, and type of care being considered.

The timeline depends on the family’s circumstances and level of urgency. It includes planning and family preparation, an in-person intervention phase generally structured across two days, and six months of ongoing family recovery coaching.

No. We consider both local and national options. Recommendations are based on the person’s needs, safety, finances, insurance, treatment history, and the appropriate level of care, not simply geographic proximity.

No. Reflection Family Interventions is independent of treatment centers. This allows us to help families evaluate options based on fit rather than an obligation to a particular facility.

Drew and Shahar are so very patient and enormously kind. More than that, they are experts in the fields of treatment and professional intervention for a wide range of substance use and other addictions. I couldn’t recommend them more enthusiastically.

Our family had only hours to take action and help our loved one make the right decision for longer term care, and we could not have done it without the guidance and care of Reflection Family Interventions. Within hours, Shahar knew our entire story, had devised a full plan, and coordinated an interventionist flying in the following morning to learn about our story, our loved one’s struggles, and how to best approach things. Within the first few days, we knew we had made the right choice with Reflection. Now, after 6 months, we don’t know where we’d be without them. For anyone who’s been through this experience, there are a lot of ups and downs. Having Andrew and his team by our side throughout this entire process is what has kept us sane and constantly learning how to grow and improve ourselves. Behind their expertise, Andrew, Shahar, and the rest of the team simply bring such a great personal touch that makes them feel like part of the family. We cannot recommend them enough!

We’ve only been working with Reflections Family Interventions for about a week so far, but the impact has already been profound. From our very first conversation, I felt supported, understood, and guided through THE most emotionally overwhelming situation of my life. Their team helped us carry out an intervention that know we could not have done on our own. They were clear, compassionate, and deeply experienced — helping us prepare every detail while also preparing us emotionally for the moment. Even more importantly, they’ve continued to be there after the intervention, offering steady support and reassurance during the incredibly fragile days that followed. When my son was in crisis and I was flooded with fear and guilt, they took my calls and responded to my texts without hesitation — grounding me when I felt like I might fall apart. They helped me stay strong in moments when I would have otherwise caved, and reminded me of why boundaries are an act of love. That kind of support is priceless. I know we still have a long road ahead and several more months of support with them, but even this early on, I can say that Reflections Family Interventions has already changed the trajectory of our story. If you are feeling lost, scared, or unsure of what to do next — this is the team you want in your corner.

Without Andrew's team of experienced interventionists ( shout out to Tiffany) we would not have managed to get our son the help that he so desperately needs. Reflection takes a comprehensive approach, treating the patient and supporting the whole family so that all learn a new healthy way to function. We are very thankful.

My family found Reflections to help me go to treatment. With the help of Andrew, Shahar, and my interventionist, Eric, I can truly share gratitude for the time/effort this group put towards my recovery and my family’s healing. With weekly family meetings (with my family while I was in treatment—and all of us after), Andrew was able to help us redefine our family dynamic and rebuild individual relationships. Each phase of this process serves an intentional purpose (planning, intervention, treatment, family mediation, aftercare). And, of course, a special shoutout to Eric who was able to understand/address my family while we were in one of the darkest, most broken places. I can’t describe my appreciation for Reflections (and Eric) whom had a solid plan to get me to treatment whether it was going to take 20-minutes or 4 days. Much gratitude

We did not know where to turn to get the necessary help for our family member who was desperately in need of treatment. We were told about Reflection Family Intervention and called them right away. We spent hours talking with Shahar about the situation and explaining the importance that we needed to get help ASAP. She was a very intent listener and took notes on what we told her. We hired them and immediately we had the intention specialist come. Every step is very well thought through before moving forward. They provided us booklets of information to assist us with the process not only for the family members but steps to help our loved one. They don’t overload you with information but give you the information that you need when you need it. That was so helpful because you are overwhelmed as it is just trying to get help for your loved one. Andrew and Shahar are both very supportive, caring, helpful people that have lots of contacts all over the country and are a wealth of resources for every situation. Could not have gotten to this place without your assistance, support and direction. Thank you both!! Debbie Sattler

I simply cannot praise Drew and Shahar enough. When I needed help for a family members addiction, I had no idea where to turn, after calling multiple Intervention companies and Interventionists I found reflection and instantly felt like family. Their professionalism and compassion was unmatched in my search. They also have the most comprehensive family aftercare I could find, and continued to guide my family for six months after our successful intervention. It was scary at first, now I can’t imagine what I would have done without them.
